The mountains of Appalachia have an abundance of the most precious natural resource of all, water. Here in Letcher County, where we live, the little streams and creeks flow together to form the headwaters of three rivers, the North Fork of the Kentucky, the Cumberland, and the Big Sandy. Unfortunately, we have not done near enough to protect those precious waters. All three of those rivers are contaminated from sewage and coal wastes before they leave the county. Sometimes we seem bent on destroying ourselves.
