Creativity is almost a prerequisite to carving out a life in the mountains of Appalachia. It’s not an easy place to make a living. We’ve had to make do with what we have and to use a little ingenuity when we have to do without. For example, take Cora Whitaker, who ran the Army Surplus store in east Jenkins. No umbrella to shield her from the sun? No problem, a parka hanging on the line and her cane will do just fine.
